Immortal aliens have observed Earth for centuries, making full sensory movies of wars, natural disasters, and horrific human activities . . . all to relieve their boredom. When they finally became jaded by ordinary, run-of-the-mill tragedies, they found ways to create their own disasters, just to amuse themselves. However, interfering with human activities was forbidden, and by the time Investigator Kelexel arrived to investigate, things were really getting out of hand. . . .
The Heaven Makers Frank Herbert 9781614752608 Books
This was a serialized novel originally--so it's not one of the major works written by Frank Herbert, and nowhere near as good as even the non-Dune novels such as The Dosadi Experiment (Tor Science Fiction) or The Santaroga Barrier. The plot centers around aliens who are immortal and entertain themselves by creating theatrical films of human drama; murders, love triangles and all the viciousness and heights of human emotion--only, the dramas are filmed by means of machinery that provokes the emotions in unsuspecting players on Earth. The opening is slow; the conversation among the aliens is dull and obscure, but once the action moves to Earth and a nasty husband-wife knife murder, things get very interesting. Herbert's writing clears up and becomes crisp and vivid. And when we see the aliens suddenly at work, through psychologist Thurlow's eyes, eyes that have been oddly damaged by an explosion and covered with polarizing lenses to protect them, things get quite interesting. When the Chem aliens kidnap a human female, it gets even better.
While not one of Herbert's better novels, and despite it suffering from vagueness of the opening chapters (something it shares with The Godmakers) this is still an exciting science fiction novel. Herbert on a mediocre day is better than many at their best. If you can get past the opening chapters, you will find plenty to enjoy in this classic sci-fi novel.

The Heaven Makers Frank Herbert 9781614752608 Books Reviews
This book is a far cry from Hebert's later work in the Dune series, but it is still a good read.
We, I think. have all of Herberts work with the addition of Heaven Makers Most enjoyable reading, hard to put down.
Solid read, works like this defined an era
Interesting concept, well structured and the plot moves you along very easily. Recommended as it is a change from the more regular themes. You can appreciate the quality of the writer.
2 thirds through this book really takes off. You might want to skim some before. Just amazing ladt 30 pages!
I could barely put this down and get some sleep. Vivid story line, and a great lesson in avoiding a programmed society. Keep it real, folks, or this just could be non-fiction.
A very thought provoking book.
I have read Mr Hurberts 'Dune' series, which I liked.
This small book proves he had other ideas and would have been an interesting bloke to have drink with.
If you have a thing against little aliens who live forever give this book a miss as it will upset you.
This in my opinion is worth a read.
