I loved this book! Slade has long been my favorite New Species and now Moon is officially right up there with him. It's probably only appropriate given Moon was the one who helped Slade out with Trisha in his book....Anyway, in the last book (Shadow), at the very end, Moon had been shot with a tranquilizer style dart with a drug that disoriented him, caused memory loss and left him feral, something that could cause him to be banished to the Wild Zone, or even to be put down. With the NS team having no way to combat this new drug, Justice contacted Dr. Joyce Yards, Moon's original therapist from when the NS were first rescued. Moon was known to have had deep feelings for her, and given her background as a therapist, Moon's in particular, Justice was willing to try anything to reach past his feral behavior to try and save moon.
What was not quite as widely known was that Joy had feelings for Moon (who she only ever knew as 466, since she left before he had picked a name) as well. Only Joy had left her job with the New Species after less than 6 months, ostensibly because she didn't want to be banned from ever seeing Moon again (a fear she had since they were so recently rescued), or to lose her job and ability to practice, and because she wasn't sure just how true or long-term Moon's feelings really were given he had just escaped a lifetime ordeal and she was one of very few women he knew.
The story unfolds as Moon works through periods of lucidity and bouts of feral instability and memory loss. This backdrop forces Moon and Joy to talk about the past, their feelings for each other then and now, and ultimately where they stand with each other, so there is a lot more emotional dialogue in this book than in many of the previous ones. It also draws an awesome picture of Moon, the male New Species who has evolved from the time he was initially released, through some of his therapy with Joy, to the present, with enough dialogue with others, like his best friend Harley, about their friendship(s) and the person Moon had became after Joy was no longer in the picture. The chemistry between Moon and Joy was typically terrific as well (the heat factor is high!).
Loved this one....loved the plot, the dialogue, the friendship with Harley, the humor...of course the love story....and the cover picture isn't too bad either (best one yet!)!! You won't be disappointed, especially if you are fan of the New Species series!

The books can be read as stand-alone stories, but it is advisable to read them in order to get the most enjoyment from the series. Dr. Joyce Yards has never met anyone as sexy or as irresistible as 466. He refuses to discuss anything except getting her naked beneath him. I have read all of the books in the series so far and if you decide to read this series, you will just have to accept that some amount of the action that you are really interested in won't be shown to you, just summarized by secondary characters; it literally happens (to varying degree) in every book. Every book.
That aside, I really enjoyed the relationship in this book. Moon is a recurring character in the series, a great friend to others, and I was very excited for his book. I loved Moon's friendship with Harley as well. The MF, Joy, is interesting as well. Was it a perfect book? No. Was it in line with the expectations for the series, yes. 5 stars.
Here's an analogy Christmas/Holiday Season=New Species books. I have been anticipating and impatiently waiting for this book. It finally arrived yesterday on my and I finished all the "stuff" I had to do so I could sit down last night and read this book without any interruptions. I shut my bedroom door, turned on my kindle and entered the world of New Species. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and when finished, I was so sad it was over and had to leave. I can only think of one other author (Christine Feehan - Carpathians) that has created a literary world that so entices and enraptures me in the adult genre. In my mind, I know exactly what all the characters look like, how they act, who they enteract best with, what Homeland and Reservation look like and so on and so forth. I know that Laurann will write more books for this series, but I also know that someday she will stop. A very sad day.... For me, the test of a good book is how fast do I re-read it? A 5 = re-read immediately, 4 = in a few days and so forth. I overlook minor editing issues completely. This book in the series is a 5. In fact, in my opinion, the only book in this whole series that isn't a 4 or a 5 was Obsidian and that was because the female lead (Dr. Ali) was such a nincompoop! But in this book, the female lead (Joy) reminds me of Lauren in the book Wrath - so smart and so madly in love with the Hero. And then there is Moon......sigh. This short, finite little Holiday Season for me is over, but it is filled with such good memories. Thanks Laurann!
Moon was destroyed when the psychiatrist that he was so connected to and so attracted left with no warning and no explanation. Joyce left because she had to do her job and her job wasn't sleeping with Moon, no matter how much she really, really, really wanted to.
Now, he needs her. He's lost years of his memory due to being drugged, and the only person who can get to him is Joyce.
I really hate the male psych doctor in this. It doesn't seem like he likes the Species at all, so why keep him on, even if it's for political reasons? Surely they could find someone else who actually likes them who they can keep on for political reasons.
I like how protective Moon's friends are of him. It's good to have friends like that.
