Rebecca Miller is a gifted veterinarian with an extraordinary understanding of animal behavior. She is leading a fulfilling life as the owner and operator of the Animal Friends Veterinary Clinic. Ever since her 30th birthday, her mother has made it her mission to help Rebecca find a man, get married, and give her grandchildren. But Rebecca doesn't see the need for a man in her life. She has her dog, Captain, and that's all the companionship she needs. However, her world changes the day she literally runs into Derrick Peterson, a gorgeously handsome ER doctor.

Derrick's experiences with women have taught him that they are vain, silly, and untrustworthy. He keeps his relationships with them brief and superficial. However, he finds himself being irresistibly drawn to Rebecca. She's smart, witty, compassionate, and very different from the women he usually encounters. Will Rebecca be the one to break down the wall he's spent a lifetime building around his heart?

Now, I don't normally review books, but I just had to review this one because after I finished the novel I felt a little deceived. It wasn't a four star book. I don't agree with any of the positive reviews. It was a sweet story, yes, but also incredibly convenient. In my mind, none of the events that happened would ever happen in real life, so the novel just wasn't believable for me.

Secondly, the writing just wasn't that great. Now, I could never write a novel in a million years, and I applaud the author on even being able to come up with a story and write it down at all, but I feel it's my duty as a reviewer of this book to let you know that it's written very plainly in short, stumpy sentences. For instance "He stood on the opposite side of the exam table. He was tall and barrel-chested. He wore a black leather vest over a tight black T-shirt." For me, these are all just very basic, run of the mill sentences describing a man. There was no charm or prose to it whatsoever and I felt like that through the entire novel.

Not to mention the cliche phrases used time and time again in this novel. I think every character "threw his/her head back and laughed" at least once and I got rather tired of hearing how Derrick's gold flecks in his eyes were either "burning with intensity" or "glowing with intensity" (if you have a kindle fire and can search the word "flecks" I highly recommend doing it to see what I mean). By the way, I don't think I've ever seen anyone in my entire life "throw their head back and laugh".

Pros:
-Very easy to read
-Moves along

Cons:
-Amateur writing
-Lots of cliche phrases
-Not believable

I'm glad I didn't pay for it because I don't think it is worth the $2.99.

Dogs Aren't Men (Audible Audio Edition) Billi Tiner Rebecca Roberts Books Reviews

I thought this would be an extremely light hearted read just based on the title alone but there was so much substance and angles it was a REALLY good read. It was about a 30 year old female veterinarian finding love. A scorned little boy turned man finding out that there are people/females out there that have substance to them and it okay to allow your heart to love. Great dogs who are loyal to a fault are also great side characters in this book. The story had me laugh out loud in a couple of places, get tears eyed with worry (I'm a sucker when it comes to furry little people) and swooned at other parts. This book really had it all including some suspense and high action. You don't come across too many books that can seamlessly weave so much into one conducive story like this. Highly enjoyable and would add to my recommendations of "must reads" for others out there who are fellow book addicts or just your every once in awhile curl in bed with a good book type person.
It's great to find a book like this. You feel like you know the characters and the plot keeps you interested until the end. Any dog lover will be pulled in. There is crime, romance, and a bit of mystery woven into this wonderful story of a few months in the life of a small-town vet.
I quite enjoyed this story, but it needed a whole lot of tightening up before it was published. There's way too much unnecessary detail on things that have no bearing on the story. The male interest has a whole lot of personality issues which should have been dealt with instead, to make the romance part of the story more believable. There are a lot of sub-plots, which is okay, but they needed to be dealt with a little better IMHO. One thing that really annoyed me, was that the author (and the vet) continued to refer to dogs' 'hair'. Dogs have fur. If it was only in the dialogue, I might have let it pass as a quirk of the character. The same for 'the dog's arm'. Dogs have legs. Four of them. Forelegs and hind legs. How can a vet make that mistake? The other thing is that this story is aimed squarely at dog lovers. As one of those, I hate to read stories where the (wonderful, beloved) dogs are left alone all day, and the only compensation is to be allowed outside for a few minutes when the owner returns after incredibly long days. The main character's dog was taken for one walk in the whole book. I found that really annoying!
A very cute story about a veterinarian who loves everything about her life except she just turned thirty and she hasn't met her perfect match. Her mother is worried, but Rebecca Miller feels her life is full. Her mother reminds her, dogs aren't men. Suddenly there seems to be three attractive men in her life. One is Mitch, a handsome, friendly policeman. She loves him like a brother. Two is Derrick, an ER doctor. Rebecca is intensely attracted to him but just can't figure him out. Three is Brian, a contractor working on her house and romancing her on the side. She is missing the strong attraction that she has for Derrick but she does have feelings for him. Meanwhile there is some trouble at work. Her receptionist has an accident and the replacement has an abusive boyfriend, who threatens Rebecca. There is a terrible betrayal on the romantic front and an almost fatal attack.. But we do get a happy ending.

There was definitely some danger and some scary things going on here. There was some romance and an unexpected lie, and many animals sprinkled in the mix. Add in three suitors, a girl's basketball team, friends with advice, some injuries, some arrests, and a wedding and you have exactly what was needed for a great story.

Get the book! I think you'll love it. I did.
