One Night for Love A Novel Bedwyn Saga Mary Balogh 9780440226000 Books
this is the first of a six book series about a Duke and his siblings during the aftermath of the Napoleonic war. As an introduction, it is a good story and introduces enough of the character and background of the Duke and the next hero/heroine into the story to enable the reader to start the next volume without the sensation of having missed something or that the next volume is a repeat of the prior volume with 20% new material. In the first book the primary characters are the second brother- the military officer, and the sister of one of his subordinate officers. To me most of the plot was predictable-A Colonel with a battlefield death promise to care for a sister, meeting the sister, the ideals of honor, keeping promises etc and the eventual marriage. What was nice about this book was that there was some interesting twists that allowed the reader to get glimpses of the rest of the family, particularly the Duke as head of the family and an introduction into the character of the next hero/heroine. As always, the work is well written, the thoughts and dialogues flow and read naturally and time passes without either dragging or rushing the story.Ms Balogh is one of those writers that seems to have a good handle on developing a believable male character that is not fairytale perfect but truthful and trustworthy. I do like her men.Tags : One Night for Love: A Novel (Bedwyn Saga) [Mary Balogh] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. One reckless man . . . One passionate woman. Another gut wrenching story by Mary Balogh. An absolutely riveting story about two people - Neville Wyatt and Lily Doyle, who were married on the military trail during the war between England and France - in part because her father died and she needed a protector. But, also because Neville, the future Earl of Kilbourne had fallen in love with the lovely fairy-like creature that was Lily even though she was not a woman of his class, nor what would be considered a suitable wife. Then after one day of married life, their lives are torn asunder and through a misunderstanding of perceived loss, they are separated for 13 months.
When Lily is able to do so, she sets out on a journey that ultimately leads her to England to Neville's home. Problem is, Neville is within moments of marrying a young woman to whom he was expected to marry from childhood - his beautiful cousin, Lauren. Enter Lily into the church looking like a little beggar girl to interrupt the wedding lest Neville make a horrid mistake.
This book had me on pins and needles and even though it was my second time to read it, I still feel a lump in my throat. Talk about a phenomenal love story - this is it!. I loved Neville's unwavering determination from the moment he saw Lily and recognized her as the wife he left behind during the war. I loved the fact that he made no excuses for Lily's manners, her inability to read and all the other parts of her that contributed to making her less than a suitable countess. He demanded respect for her - rather commanded respect for the woman he had married and whom he loved.
I loved Lily's independence and the fact she was able to make something of herself while staying true to her heart and soul. So many difficult things in her life which could have caused her to be bitter, but she chose life and love and cast off the bad memories.
Awesome read! One of Balogh's best.
Second reading of this book (this time listening to the audiobook and reading the paperback simultaneously) and I can describe the experience once more in only one word WOW!
Aiden is such a wonderful character. He is a Colonel, the brother of a Duke (the best of all Dukes, the Duke of Bewcastle), and duty is his middle name.
He is so adorable because he is so stiff, he is as subtle in his conversations as an anvil, but he is so honorable, so kind. He is one of those gems that shines bright below, but needs to be explored and polished. For reasons you will find out reading the book, he has hidden all his joyful and friendly personality behind walls and walls of seriousness.
Eve is a heart with a person and not the other way around. She loves intensely, she helps those around her, she cannot stand to witness pain without jumping to help.
Her house is full of outcasts, including a dog with only one eye and three legs.
She is a daughter of a former coal miner that became extremely rich after marrying the mine owner’s daughter.
Their worlds were universes apart. In regular circumstances they would have never met.
But her brother was a Captain (Captain Percival Morris) in the army, and one day have saved Aiden’s life and, by return, earned a credit of honor.
When the Captain is dying, he asks Aiden to go tell his sister about his death personally and to be sure to protect her “no matter what”.
Turns out the only way Aiden can protect Captain Morris’s sister is by marrying her.
Not happy at all by the prospect, but feeling honor bond to do it, Aiden ends up marrying Eve with an agreement to leave her after the wedding and not keep any contact.
But life had other plans, and also the Duke of Bewcastle...
Beautifully written romance, full of angst, confusion, admiration, friendship and love.
Mary Balogh is such a gifted writer. What a joyful read!
I love the Bedwyn's. This is the first book in the series featuring the "Bedwyn" family ruled by their eldest brother "Wolfric" - the DUKE all dukes should be modeled after. This is Aidan's story....the boy who hated violence and only wanted land to own and to live his life raising animals and food....forced to join the military as a 2nd son, he spent years serving his country well. Then, the dying wish of a soldier to his commanding officer - Aidan - to take the message of his passing to his sister and to PROTECT HER at all costs....begins another chapter in Aidan's life....one he never imagined. This is a heartfelt and heartwarming story full of loyalty, family values and love. You won't be sorry you began this journey into the Bedwyn family....but don't stop there all the other siblings stories are just as compelling.....I love them all but this is my first favorite Bedwyn story and Wolfric's story - Slightly Dangerous is my second favorite.
